Watch a Movie With Me Sunday: Ralph Bakshi’s WIZARDS.

Oh, sweet glorious Wizards. How I so clearly recall you being banned from my youth because of your brazen mix of sex and violence, all not very uncommon for Ralph Bakshi animated movies of the time, but still, apparently not OK for my young, developing mind. But guess what? This is my site, and I am (legally) well into adulthood now, so guess what we are watching today? Yup, good guess, Remlins. We are watching the Ralph Bakshi masterpiece, Wizards.

So how would you describe this movie to someone who has never seen it? Well, you wouldn’t really describe it. You would just feed them drugs and then sit them on a couch and watch them watch it. That is how it works.

Everything Ralph Bakshi did in the 70′s was pretty much the opposite of Disney in every way.

Now don’t get me wrong. I am not encouraging you to drug your friends and make them watch this. I am simply implying doing that would be a more interesting watch for both of you, no doubt. But even sober, it is interesting to see the themes of war used here, as well as very stylized, almost steampunk meets Fern Gully type of world that Bakshi seems to create with such ease.

Some of the ideas here were well ahead of their time. Sadly, the execution of the whole thing isn’t as great as the concept. Having said that, it still very much merits a watching.

So sit back and enjoy. It’s a trippy ride, to say the least.

WIZARDS

Be prepared for some bouncing animated mammaries as well.

And whether or not you liked his movies or respected his style, between the mature content of his animation, and his indie style of making films exactly how he wanted to make them, Ralph Bakshi was a pioneer. Plus, he was animating large boobs LONG before the internet made it cool.

Jeez, she could cut glass with those things.
